What is GEO, and how do you get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT?

GEO is generative engine optimisation: making your brand visible and accurately described inside AI answers. Here is how it works and where to start.

Phone with an AI answer recommending a brand, with its sources

GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of making your brand visible and accurately described in AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. You get mentioned by being clearly described on your own site, cited by sources those tools trust, and useful on the questions your customers ask. Here is how we approach it at Upsure Media in Ahmedabad.

More customers now ask an AI tool "which agency should I hire" or "which brand is best for" before they ever open Google. If your brand is missing from that answer, you lose the shortlist.

SEO, AEO and GEO: what is the difference?

SEO ranks your pages on Google and Bing. AEO (answer engine optimisation) structures your content so search engines and voice assistants show it as the direct answer. GEO gets your brand named inside AI-generated answers. They build on each other: good SEO and AEO make GEO much easier.

How AI tools decide which brands to mention

AI tools summarise what they find across the web. They are more likely to mention a brand when the same clear description of it appears in several trusted places: the brand's own website, news and trade publications, directories, reviews and expert articles.

Five steps to start

  1. Describe yourself the same way everywhere. Write one plain sentence about what you do, who for and where, and use it on your website, social profiles and listings.
  2. Add structured data. Organisation, service and FAQ schema help machines read your site correctly.
  3. Publish answers, not slogans. Write pages that answer real questions in the first two lines, the way a customer would ask them.
  4. Earn mentions in trusted publications. PR coverage and expert articles are among the sources AI tools cite most.
  5. Make your site easy for AI crawlers. Allow the major AI crawlers in robots.txt and publish an llms.txt file that summarises your company.

How to track it

Pick a fixed set of prompts your customers would ask, test them every month in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and record whether your brand appears and how it is described. Change one thing at a time and watch the trend, not a single answer.

Our SEO, AEO and GEO service runs this end to end, from technical SEO to AI visibility tracking.
